As a follow-up to my piece earlier today about Telcos in the new world, Martin Warwick of Telecom TV seems to agree with me that some telcos won’t be around much longer although he says it with his characteristic British subtlety. The following video is an interesting in-road into a model that could help telcos survive, and apart from the old telco-lobbyist tropes that regulation is bad and competition and investment can’t coexist (nonsense both, as I have argued in the past) I find myself agreeing with a lot of what’s being said, or at least hinted at.

It’s not surprising since this is sponsored by IBM and the Smarter Planet initiative is all about industries outside of the ICT sector leveraging ICT assets for better and more efficient services. I did get a laugh from watching the CEO of Orascom worrying abbout what services people with LTE could possibly pay for, it’s so characteristic of the “old” mindframe…
