This comes, interestingly, at a time when more and more people seem to be reassessing the way the break-up happened. I often refer to this in my speeches as the original sin for not having recognised at the time that a single infrastructure structurally separated from competing service providers was a more sensible and competition friendly model than multiple vertically integrated infrastructure + services entities. It seems Michal Noll (retired professor emeritus and former dean at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California) agrees and then some in this article on Fierce Wireless entitled Why the former Bell system breakup was wrong.
