Nifty Little Services from Optimus

Smarttv Three weeks ago, just after I landed in Lisbon I started getting in the mood for the FTTH madness that was going to happen at the European FTTH Council Conference. I met with the people from Optimus – who offer triple play over FTTH in Portugal – and they were kind enough to give me a tour of their demo area. Their TV service has some really cool little things (in addition to a frankly stunning image quality, even in SD) that may not seem like much but I suspect really enhance customer experience. Two of them in particular struck me as clever and nice:

  • Kids TV is a separate front end that only presents kid channels. It even comes with a kiddie remote control that you can purchase separately so children can have a safe and dedicated TV experience.
  • Clixopedia is a wikipedia front end that's accessible on your TV. Text search can be entered via the remote control.

Neither of these options qualify as "services" per se, but they do contribute to enhancing and expanding the TV experience. They're not necessarily FTTH specific, but they could contribute to differentiating an IPTV service over fiber from your plain old IPTV…

There was also a third service which was even cooler than both of those, but unfortunately I can't talk about. Hopefully I'll be able to soon…
